Em geral, cliente ou admin, a sessão expira em poucos minutos. entrei em contato com meu host(www.ipage.com) e me informaram que o tempo de sessão deve ser definido no próprio OpenCart.

Já tentei aumentar no php.ini

Mas nada adiantou, passa uns 3 minutos no máximo e tenho que fazer login novamente.

Alguém poderia me dizer como resolver esse problema? Isso torna o OpenCart impossível de ser utilizado pra mim.

Acho que a alteração é feita no arquivo .htaccess.
Na pasta de download da Loja Opencart tem o arquivo .htaccess.txt com algumas instruções para modificar alguns parâmetros, conforme seguem abaixo:
# 1.To use URL Alias you need to be running apache with mod_rewrite enabled.

# 2. In your opencart directory rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess.

Mas nao vejo nenhuma linha ai referente a tempo de sessão.. Ou estou enganado?

Nada acontece...

Parece que não, mas no item 2 ele diz para renomear o arquivo htaccess.txt do diretório da sua loja para .htaccess .
Minha versão é a 1.5.1 e o php.ini é este: Para alterar o tempo para 2(duas) horas tente alterar as linhas:
mysql.connect_timeout = 120;
session.gc_maxlifetime = 7200;

P.S.: Repare que a linha "session.cookie_lifetime = 12000000;" não existe na minha versão.

Estou tendo o mesmo problema mas só quando uso SSL. Alguém tem alguma sugestão? Já tentei as soluções acima. Meu host também é Ipage!

Resolvido! O Suporte deles só alterou meu session_path do cgi!
